What is reflective practice?

Reflective practice can be tremendously useful in the classroom. This principle allows teachers to identify and reflect on past actions and experiences, recognising the patterns which are recurring time and again.

By harnessing reflective practice, it is then possible to trace the way these same patterns are shaping our thoughts and behaviour, and adapt them to something more positive if necessary.

The same principles can be applied to student learning, allowing participants to understand not only the key skills and concepts which they are embracing throughout the school day, but the way this knowledge is being absorbed.

It is one of the easiest areas of the teaching process to leave behind when things get stressful, but also one of the most important areas to focus on with renewed vigour. The time you spend on reflective practice – and encouraging it in others – will pay off in fantastic ways, as it allows you to focus on the things which truly matter.
